One Skill To Learn In The New Year: Understanding, Supporting and Guiding Others with Kindness

by Claire Gardner

In the fast-paced world of apprenticeship training, it’s easy to forget that everyone we encounter—staff or learners—has a unique story that shapes their behaviour and choices. As Managing Director of Dynamic Training, I’ve seen how understanding, supporting, and guiding others with kindness can transform lives, especially for those with lived experiences such as neurodivergence, or learning disabilities.

We often post about subjects similar to this on our blog. To follow these topics, and similar articles, you can view our blog or follow us on LinkedIn or Facebook.

The Power of Understanding

Behaviour often reflects unseen circumstances. A learner missing deadlines might be juggling caregiving responsibilities, or a staff member’s frustration could stem from personal struggles. For neurodivergent individuals or those with learning disabilities, challenges in traditional environments—rigid structures, sensory overload, or one-size-fits-all approaches—can magnify these pressures.

Understanding means recognising these differences as natural human variations. By exploring the “why” behind behaviour, we replace judgment with empathy, opening the door to meaningful support.

Support That Makes a Difference

Support transforms understanding into action. For learners, this might include flexible deadlines, assistive technologies, or offering materials in multiple formats. For neurodivergent staff, it might mean creating sensory-friendly spaces, clear communication, or tailored feedback.

I’ve seen how small adjustments unlock potential. A dyslexic learner excelled when given voice-to-text software and extra time. An autistic staff member thrived with minor accommodations in communication, operations and workspace setup. These changes don’t just benefit individuals—they enrich the entire team by fostering diversity and innovation.

Guiding with Kindness

Kindness in guidance is key to helping individuals navigate challenges and grow. This doesn’t mean avoiding difficult conversations but delivering accessible feedback respectfully and constructively.

Neurodiversity and the Workplace

For neurodivergent individuals and those with learning disabilities, the workplace often poses significant challenges. Rigid expectations and traditional productivity measures can overlook their strengths. By embracing inclusive practices, we unlock talent that drives creativity and resilience, benefiting everyone.

Employers and training providers play a critical role in this transformation. Simple adjustments—like flexible roles, structured feedback, and mentorship—can create environments where neurodivergent talent thrives, strengthening teams and outcomes.

The Ripple Effect of Kindness

When we lead with understanding, support, and kindness, the impact is profound. Learners grow into confident professionals, staff become engaged contributors, and the culture of inclusion ripples outward.

In my role, I’ve seen how a single act of kindness—a listening ear, a flexible policy, or a bit of extra patience—can change the course of someone’s journey.

A Call to Action

Every person we meet is navigating unique challenges. For neurodivergent individuals and those with learning disabilities, the world isn’t always accommodating, but with intentional effort, we can help level the playing field.

As leaders, educators, and colleagues, let’s commit to understanding, supporting, and guiding with kindness. Together, we can build a world where everyone has the chance to thrive. Because kindness isn’t just good for people—it’s good for progress.
